Katsumasa Suzuki was born in Gamagori City,
Aichi Prefecture, on November 14, 1943.
He graduated from Gamagori High School in March, 1963, and received a
B.A. in Economics from Nihon University in 1967. In his younger days, he discussed politics
and the future of Japan with his colleagues from Higashi-Mikawaarea at Junior Chamber.
He actively served as a prefectural assembly member in his 30s and as the
Mayor of Gamagori City in his 40s.
During Katsumasa Suzuki’s service as a
prefectural assembly member, he proposed to build “Laguna Gamagori”in Umino Karuizawa Kousou, and the complex was built in 2002 with the cooperation of
Aichi Prefecture and Toyota Motor Corporation, among others. As mayor, he successfully promoted Gamagori
as a location for the Triathlon World Cup.
Through his efforts, Gamagori has become known worldwide as a triathlon
town, and it will host the International Triathlon Championship in conjunction
with the 2005 World Exposition in Aichi.
One of Katsumasa Suzuki’s strengths is his
broad network of relationships, which he has developed since his days as a
Junior Chamber, prefectural assemble member and mayor. His relationships expand across party
affiliation. He has journeyed from the
Democratic Liberal Party (DLP) to Independent, then to the Democratic Party of
Japan (DPJ) in constant search for new partners to execute genuine reform in
Japan. The goal of this reform is to
create a society where is free of constraints between politicians, bureaucrats,
big business, working-class and young people.
With his strong belief that Japan in the
21st century has to achieve a two-party system, Katsumasa Suzuki is
currently actively serving as Senior Director-General of the 14th
District of Aichi Prefecture for DPJ, and as Vice Director-General of the Local
Government Department for DPJ. In the
